YATES CENTER — Tanner McNutt, Humboldt High sophomore, was ranked No. 1 in Class 2A’s 400-meter dash going into Friday’s Kansas Class 2A Regional Track meet.
McNutt didn’t disappoint as he won the regional title in the boys’ 400-meter dash in 51.10 seconds. McNutt captured three Class 2A regional event championships in all at the meet hosted by Yates Center High School.
McNutt claimed the gold medal in the triple jump with a leap of 40 feet, 8 1/4 inches. He was a gold medalist in the long jump at 20’8”.
Yates Center High senior Brae Adams qualified for her fourth straight state track meet. She claimed the silver medal in the discus with a throw of 106’7”.
McNutt and Adams are among 10 area athletes qualifying for this weekend’s Kansas All-Class State Track and Field Championship meet in Wichita. The top four finishers in each event advance to the state meet.
The meet is at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium Friday and Saturday. A detailed time schedule for area high school athletes at the state meet will be in Wednesday’s Register.
“The weather cooperated to get the regional in along with a lot of hard work by the Yates Center school district staff. A lot of water was drained and moved after the rain stopped,” said Dan Berg, Yates Center High head track coach.
Marmaton Valley High’s Zach Louk, a junior, qualified in the three distance races. Louk was second at the regional in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 3.90 seconds. He earned the silver medal in the 3200-meter run in 10:51.80 and the bronze medal in the 1600-meter run in 4:45.20.
Yates Center senior Cherokee Shaffer is headed to the state track meet in the girls’ high jump after taking third in the regional at 4’8”. Freshman Mindi Holloway was fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:38.
Sam Aguirre, Yates Center sophomore, claimed the bronze medal in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 43.10 seconds. Aguirre placed fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.20 seconds.
“Sam ran well in both races and made the finals in the long jump. He has really come on this year and we’re expecting him to have a good state meet,” Berg said. “Brae is making her fourth trip to state, Cherokee her second and it is Mindi’s first trip.”
Humboldt High’s 4×400-meter relay team advances to the state meet by finishing third at the regional. Seniors Jarred Barr and Derrick McCall and sophomore Hayden Boring and Nick Keazer combined to run the race in 3:38. McCall placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 134’ 1/2”.

Girls
Humboldt’s Whitney Strack was sixth in the 100-meter dash in 13.60 seconds and Yates Center’s Paige Steinforth was 10th in the 400-meter dash in 1:11.80. In the 800-meter run, Shaffer was ninth in 2:54. followed by Humboldt’s Michaela Bartlett and Kolbyn Allen in 11th (2:54.9) and 12th (2:55.20), respectively.
Marmaton Valley’s Ashtynn Louk was fifth in the 3200-meter run in 14:22.50 and seventh in the 1600-meter run in 6:34.90. Humboldt Raquel Hill was sixth in the 3200-meter run in 14:43.
Humboldt’s 4×800-meter relay team of Allen, Bartlett, Hill and Anna Setter was fifth in 12:25.90. Yates Center’s 4×400-meter relay team of Steinforth, Shaffer, Haley Bedell and Holloway was fifth in 4:32.50.
Holloway was eighth in the 100-meter high hurdles in 19.10 seconds. Bedell was eighth in the 300-meter low hurdles in 57.10 seconds. Steinforth placed sixth in the high jump, clearing 4’8”.
Marmaton Valley’s Mercedes Trollope was fifth in the long jump at 14’0” and Humboldt’s Strack was seventh at 13’8”. Trollope placed seventh in the triple jump at 29’11 1/2”.
Humboldt’s Darrah Tinkler finished fifth in the javelin with a throw of 79 feet and Yates Center’s Bedell was seventh at 77’3”. Tinkler was ninth in the shot put with a toss of 24’3/4”.
Boys
Humboldt’s Keazer placed seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:14.10 and Marmaton Valley’s Marcus Miller was seventh in the 1600-meter run in 5:19.90. Humboldt’s Michael Davis took 10th in the 3200-meter race in 12:57.80.
In the 110-meter high hurdles, Jud Hawley of Humboldt was eighth in 20.10 seconds. Marmaton Valley’s Zack English was fifth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 43.80 and Hawley was 10th in 54.80.
Marmaton Valley’s 4×100-meter relay team of Carlos Gonzales, David Harris, Chase Dudley and English was sixth in 47.90 seconds. The MVHS 4×400-meter relay team of Lucas Hamlin, Gonzales, English and Louk was fifth in 3:44.4.
Humboldt’s 4×800 relay team of Barr, Boring, Keazer and McCall was fifth in 9:25.9. Humboldt’s Trezz Rogers was sixth in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet.
In the long jump, Yates Center’s Aguirre was seventh at 18’1” and Boring was eighth at 17’11”. Marmaton Valley’s Gonzales was ninth in the triple jump at 35’4” and Dudley was 10th at 33’10 1/2”.
Marmaton Valley’s Kaleb Stroud was eighth in the shot put at 38’8” and Yates Center’s C.J. Stifler placed 10th at 38’5 1/2”. Ryan Stephens, Marmaton Valley, finished ninth at 97’3”.
Jared Kale of Marmaton Valley was sixth in the javelin with a throw of 131’10”. Stifler was 10th at 119’0” and Humboldt’s Noah Thornburgh was 11th at 112’3”.
